Texts in french and in english in this book. Bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Karnataka is one of the largest states in India. With an antiquity that dates back to the Paleolithic Era, it has also been home to some of the most powerful empires of ancient and medieval India. The philosophers, artists and musical bards, patronised by these empires, launched socio-religious and literary movements which have endured to the present day. Hampi in the mountains, and Gokarna on the west coast, are regarded as some of the most important Hindu pilgrimage centres, as well as being famous tourist destinations in India.

Hampi village is located in the easthern part of the state, within the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire. The whole 43 square kilometres is a rocky area and houses huge monolithic sculptures and many monuments belonging to the old city. Many temples are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Gokarna is an attactive temples town, still having traditional brick and wooden houses. Temples are referred to in a number of Hindu historical literature texts. It’s a place of contrasts: alongside its pilgrims, it is now a paradise for backpackers, hippis and yogis, with palm trees, blue sea and white sandy beaches.

Ces derniers ont vu l’émergence de courants sociaux-culturels et littéraires permettant l’épanouissement de philosophes, d’artistes et de musiciens qui imprègnent encore aujourd’hui les traditions indiennes. Hampi dans les montagnes et Gokarna sur la côte Ouest sont tous deux de hauts lieux de pélerinage dédiés à l’Indouisme, ainsi que des destinations réputées comme incontournables à travers toute l’Inde.

Le village d’Hampi est situé à l'Est de l’état, à l’intérieur des ruines de l’Empire Vijayanagar. Ce site de 43 km2 abrite de gigantesques sculptures monulithiques et des temples somptueux. Nombre d’entre eux sont référencés par l’UNESCO.
Gokarna est une ville de pélerinage attayante dont l’habitat traditionnel de bois et de briques est toujours préservé. Ces temples sont mentionnés dans de nombreux textes la littérature Hindou. C’est aussi un lieu de contrastes fréquentés par des cohortes de pelerins d’une part, et d’autre part - du côté des plages - un petits paradis pour routards, hippis et yogis.
